Uster
The Alemannic
settlement of Uster is very old and was mentioned for the first time
in documents as far back as 775. Because the castle built in 1100
by the Lords of Winterthur was located in the territory controlled
by the Counts of Rapperswil, it was not possible for a town to arise
here in the Middle Ages (the castle is now the emblem of Uster). At
the beginning of the 19th century the rural village acquired major
significance as a result of industrialisation. Together with the entire
Zurich Oberland, Uster became one of the first and most densely industrialised
regions in Europe.
Water power was harnessed on the Aabach, providing the driving force
for the textile industry’s extremely rapid economic development.
Today Uster is a town of 30'000 inhabitants, close to the city of
Zurich and the airport. It still maintains its municipal independence,
however, and offers its residents a high level of recreational value.
